Vacuum casting is a fast and cost-effective replication technology that produces high-quality plastic parts comparable to injection-molded parts. The technology uses two-component polyurethane and silicone molds created from 3D printed masters, and is especially suited for fit and function testing, marketing purposes, or short series of end-use parts.

What is vacuum casting?
This is an elastomeric casting process that uses a vacuum to draw any liquid material into a mold. Vacuum casting can be used when there is a problem with trapped air in the mold. In addition, the process can be used when there are intricate details and undercuts on the mold. In addition, the method is applicable if the material used to make the mold is fiber or reinforced wire. The process is sometimes referred to as thermoforming because the manufacturing process involves rapid prototyping of preheated plastic sheets. The material is preheated in an automated vacuum casting machine until it becomes soft and pliable.
How does vacuum casting work?
Heat, vibration and vacuum are used to sculpt plastic film and sand onto a model to form a mold in the shape of the part to be cast. Vacuum extraction is used to hold the mold in place until the molten metal solidifies.
